eSIM or pocket WiFi in Japan: questions

For one traveler, yes. A week of unlimited data costs $18.05 with RedSim, against ¥9,350 (about $58.95) for the cheapest unlimited pocket WiFi we found, at eConnect Japan, read on 2026-10-13.
One eSIM each costs less for up to 3 travelers. From 4 travelers sharing one router, the pocket WiFi costs less, as long as everyone stays near it and someone carries and charges it. One RedSim eSIM can also share its data with other phones through the hotspot.
The data never runs out, and the first 3 GB each day run at full speed. After that the speed is 1 Mbps until the next day, which still covers maps, messages and social media.
Not with an eSIM: it stays on your phone and simply ends. A pocket WiFi has to be posted back in its prepaid envelope by the return deadline, and a lost router costs ¥10,000 to ¥30,000.
Then a pocket WiFi is the simpler choice. Most iPhones from the XR on and most recent Android phones support eSIM. Check your model here.
